Thought I’d throw a poetry book in for the little kids that are around. Older children in the family will like it too, but it’s really aimed at preschool to grade 3.
The photographs almost steal the book away from the just over 200 poems. The book includes a wide variety of poetry, including classic lyric poetry, haiku, free verse, and concrete poems. Every page has somewhere between one and three poems, as well as the gorgeous National Geographic photos. ( I know I said that twice- they are that good!)
The poems are divided into chapters based on the type of animal. There are chapters on big animals, little ones, winged creatures, water creatures, strange and quiet animals.
A warning that the last chapter contains a partial poem by Walt Whitman. Read that one and see if you want to read it or not. I’m not quite sure why they added that in at all, but I hated to discount the entire book, when you could easily just skip that section.
I borrowed this book from the Chicago Public Library to see if I wanted to recommend it as part of our Summer at the Zoo study and I do!
