The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street

Fair warning the release date for this story isn’t until October. I preordered it from Amazon and don’t want to forget to post my review. Plus, I enjoyed it so much I’d like to help create a buzz. Do you love The Penderwicks? How about the All-of-a-Kind  Family? Then this is for you.

City kids hold a special place in my heart, and the Vanderbeeker family lives in New York in a brownstone on 141st Street. The family of Mom, Dad, four sisters, and a brother are both real and quirky in character. They are just the kind of people you hope will be your neighbors and friends.

This modern day classic shows a bit of what big family living is really like. Each child with their own talents and interests, all different but yet somehow managing to get along on most days.

The story begins when we find out that their reclusive landlord Beiderman (what a great name- for you Seinfeld fans I read it with the inflection of Newman!) decides not to renew their lease, and the family is forced into a move with only one month notice. No one is happy about this turn of events, and the children try to find a solution on their own with the help of their friends and neighbors.

I was thrilled to read this DRC through Edelweiss and wish this new author Karina Glaser much success! Fingers crossed that this is just the first book in a series.

The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street will be published by HMH Books for Young Readers (October 3, 2017)
